Meeting with Directorate for Food Safety

A meeting between the Director of Directorate for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs, Vesna Dakovic and MEF President, Svetlana Vuksanovic with Executive Board members took place today. The reason for the meeting was intensified control and frequency of sampling of imported goods and problems it caused to a number of businesses – MEF members.

Ms Dakovic was familiarized with the complaints that were received over the last few days by a number of Montenegrin importers related to increased control at border crossings that slows down their turnover.

Ms Dakovic explained that the intensified frequency of inspection and laboratory controls of imported goods was necessary due to an adequate risk assessment of goods placed on the market, which will alter based on laboratory analysis results. According to her, if goods of a certain producer are assessed to be safe, then the frequency of control of such goods will reduce from today’s 100 percent to (but no more than) 50 per cent. She claimed she understood the problems businesses faced, calling for their understanding and support to a successful completion of the whole process, the objective of which, from the perspective of both Directorate as and the very businesses, is unanimous – the safety of food and care for people’s public health.

Both parties agree that the current state of Montenegrin economy call for an additional intensified institutional cooperation between the two respective organizations with an aim to timely register and efficiently resolve problems businesses face. With that in mind, it is agreed that the meeting between employers – MEF members, Directorate and inspectors takes place next week in Bijelo Polje.
